The best women’s workout clothes
- With the right clothes, you’ll truly need to get to the rec focus and show off your style before meeting friends for a much-deserved refreshment some time later.
- Sweaty Betty makes our favorite workout gear for women that is as practical as it is fashion-forward.
Faking it until you make it becomes a lot easier when you look the part. So when it comes to feigning enjoyment at the gym, you’re going to need some gear to get yourself in character. Luckily, there are plenty of options these days to help you look as though you’re ready for the toughest kickboxing session, because who better to motivate you than the person staring back at you in the mirror?
One of our favorite aspects of today’s workout gear for women is that it’s never again consigned to the spinning studio or the weight room. Or then again perhaps, some of our favorite options will take you from barre class to the neighborhood bar, and have the advancement to ensure that you don’t have to stress sweat stains or smells when you make that transition. With moisture-wicking texture, cunningly put mesh panels, and insightful patterns, a lot of today’s athletic garments is genuinely implied for athletic pursuits. It’s a far cry from our days of grabbing the oldest shirt in our closet, cutting off the sleeves, and calling it a top.
When it comes to figuring out what workout gear will best suit your needs, listen to your body. After all, it’ll be your primary tool during your workouts, so if you’re uncomfortable in any way, everything else is moot. You’ll also want to consider the type of workout you’re most likely to engage in. If you prefer running to yoga, you’ll be in need of different support.
You’ll also want to keep durability in mind. You’re not only putting your workout gear through the ringer at the gym, but you’re also going to be putting it through the laundry quite a few times. So even if you’re able to save a few dollars on the initial purpose by buying something that’s a bit flimsier, you’ll have to exercise your credit card again when you find your gear starting to rip after a few cycles.
Finally, of course, price comes into consideration. Given that most workout gear doubles as everyday attire these days, you can (to some extent) think of these pieces as serving two purposes for the price of one. That said, there are some options that are more costly than others, so your budget may be a determining factor.

Golden Globes fashion moments: Looking back at red carpet style in recent years
The 2020 Golden Globes are almost upon us, and we have high expectations for red carpet fashion.
It’s been an up-and-down few years in Hollywood, and we’ve seen the effects on the red carpet. In 2018, we saw an intentionally muted style guide at the Globes: Nearly every star, male or female, wore black in solidarity with the women who have faced sexual mistreatment in the entertainment industry.
But as the dust settled, 2019 brought the return of bold colors and standout style moments. Glitter was in no short supply as stars like Regina King, Timothee Chalamet and Nicole Kidman all arrived in glitzy ensembles. Julia Roberts donned a caped pantsuit and Anne Hathaway rocked a mixed animal print.
Okay, let’s keep the look-backs going. 2018 proved that black dresses definitely don’t have to be boring! Sequins and sparkle were at an appropriate minimum, but not everyone kept things conservative: Sheer black gowns were a recurring trend, with Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jone and Issa Rae among the actresses who dared to show some skin.
At the end of the day, it was a significant contrast from the 2017 Golden Globes honorary pathway, where we saw intense patterns, low profile necklines and a surprising measure of yellow.
2016 highlighted some increasingly scandalous looks, as hudson Kate: The star wore a two-piece outfit including a minor skintight yield top. Jennifer Lawrence also flashed a bit of midriff in a draped crimson gown.

Uncommon Items owner Judy Kallberg said her business on Brady Street slowed so she is moving her shop to a shared space in Walker’s Point in the next few weeks.
Business this last year went down about 50%, Kallberg said. “But then as soon as I put out the moving sign, now business started going really good.
Uncommon Items sells an eclectic array of handcrafted jewelry, vintage-inspired dresses, clothing, art and accessories.
Uncommon Items is set to leave the 550-square-foot retail store at 1316 E. Brady St. in the coming weeks. It is having a moving sale until then.
Uncommon Items will reopen in the shared retail space Third Point of View, at 1134 S. First St. Kallberg already has one stand there selling furniture and artwork. The new space is around half the size of Uncommon Items’ current store, which Kallberg opened in 2000.
Kallberg said one reason she chose to move to Third Point of View so she won’t have to be at the store all the time. She also works at Milwaukee Area Technical College as a reference librarian.
A new tenant for the Brady Street store has not been announced.
A previous version of this story said the store would close Jan. 5. Uncommon Items will stay in the Brady Street location until the new tenant is finalized.
